Coronavirus Stimulus Check
Compared to stimulus recipients in past recessions, people today are spending much more of their stimulus money on food, Baker notes. To get your stimulus payment more quickly through direct deposit, sign up for a bank account online and add your account information on the IRS website.
The IRS will use your direct deposit information to make a direct payment of the rebate amount. Be careful when entering your information — you can’t change your bank account info after a payment has been scheduled to be delivered, the Treasury Department said in a press release.
If you had a federal tax refund directly deposited into your bank account for 2018 or 2019 and you qualify for a rebate, you probably won’t have to do anything to get it. When you file your 2020 taxes, you’ll be able to secure your second check by filling out a Recovery Rebate Credit.
For most people, you won’t have to do anything – the payment will be directly deposited into your bank account or sent to you by check or prepaid debit card. Be aware, however, that if it’s sent by check, it might take a little longer. It’s most likely that the checks will amount to $600 for each adult and child, or half the amount of the $1,200 checks sent out earlier this year.
The $600 per-person payments are part of the stimulus bill passed by Congress earlier this month and signed by Trump Sunday evening. The Democratic-controlled House voted Monday to boost payments to $2,000, but such a change would also need to clear the GOP-controlled Senate. So far, I’ve not heard from any who are complaining just yet about the second round of stimulus payments.
But even if you don’t receive your payment, you can still take steps to ensure that you receive those funds. If you haven’t received your payment yet, don’t panic, although it’s easier said than done.
For the record, stimulus checks were not mailed out to American citizens for five years–such payments are only one part of a larger recovery plan. Paper checks will begin to be mailed tomorrow, Wednesday, December 30.
If you are not set up for direct deposit, your check will be mailed using the address on your most recent tax return. Return the second check, especially if you can afford it. You can return the money via check or money order with the notation “2020EIP,” plus the Social Security number or taxpayer I.D.
As part of the $2.2 trillion CARES Act, the federal government will issue payments – by check or direct deposit – to millions of income-qualified Americans. This is what we mean by “stimulus check.” The purpose of the payments is to help people cover basic necessities at a time when many have been told to stay home and have lost income. While you won’t receive an automatic payment now, you can still claim the equivalent Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 federal income tax return.
The last round of payments are set to go in the mail right on the Jan. 15 deadline, meaning it might take three to four weeks before you receive your physical stimulus check or debit card, according to the IRS. Nearly one-third of people who received a stimulus check last summer used it to pay bills and, in a Twitter poll TWTR, -1.75%of 889,000 people, over 60% said a $600 payment would not be enough. The IRS has added a portal on their website to allow those who did not file a 2018 or 2019 tax return to provide their information for the stimulus check.
